This story happens because the Christians were being pushed out of Jerusalem by persecution, following the martyrdom of Stephen. These were not easy times to be a Christian. Just as, for different reasons, we also live in times when it is not easy to be a Christian.

Eunuch

Often (though not always) literally a castrated man. The rich African kingdoms south of Egypt (referred to here, rather than modern day Ethiopia) often used eunuchs in high positions of authority. Such a one, even a God-fearing man such as this one, would have been excluded from becoming a full convert to Judaism. But the Christian faith knows of no such exclusion, and this man became the first Gentile convert.
