In Jesus’ day, sheep were not the woolly variety we think of today. They had less wool and were kept more for meat and their milk. In fact they would probably look more like goats to us. At night, they were often kept in an enclosed pen for safe keeping, and the shepherd would lay down across the door way to provide security for them.
