In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit would come on people for a specific time and purpose. But the Prophet Joel said a time was coming when He would come on everybody – and his prophesy began its fulfilment at Pentecost. For many commentators, this represented the birth of the Church.

Acts 2:39: Promise: For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.”

In Acts 1:8 Jesus promised the disciples that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them, to be witnesses of the gospel.
