Written by the same John who wrote the gospel, these two short letters show the pastors heart – on the one hand, calling for love; on the other hand, showing the pastors concern to protect the flock from false teachers.
There are several words in Greek that are translated as love in English. The one here is ‘agapeo’ which refers to the deep, committed brotherly love that is uniquely found in Christian fellowship.
