As we approach the International Day of Education on January 24th, I want to reflect on the impact education has had on our lives. Whether as a student, a parent guiding our children on their educational journeys, or professionals contributing to the education sector – we are all connected to the transformative power of learning.
Education is often mistakenly confined to subjects and textbooks, yet its true power extends far beyond the acquisition of knowledge and into the holistic development of our children. Our schools, the vibrant hubs of learning in our communities, play an important role in shaping not only the intellect but also the character, behaviours, attitudes and values of our children.
Proverbs 16:16 (NIV) says How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!
In the context of education, this wisdom goes beyond the classroom, influencing our decisions, actions, and interactions with the world. As stewards of this wisdom, we bear the responsibility of guiding the next generation to use their learning to better themselves and society.
This year’s theme for the International Day of Education – “Learning for Lasting Peace” – aligns with the biblical call in Romans 14:19 (NIV) ‘So then we pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another’
The foundation for building harmonious relationships and understanding among people and nations begins with the open hearts of the children in our schools. Education is a long-term investment, extending beyond the walls of our schools to impact the lives of those our children encounter and the places they wander.
