Hebrew 12:1-2 “Let us run the race with perseverance”
The clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, another new year full of intentions. Social media detox, DIY projects, entering a marathon … Talking of marathons, for Christians, life is described as a race. I’ve run a few, with some being better than others for different reasons:
- Shorts and a lightweight top paid off as others were weighed down with jackets round their waists
- A training plan (with hills!) and sticking to it
- Good nutrition (a takeaway the night before was not my best decision)
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, stripping off every unnecessary weight and the sin which so easily and cleverly entangles us, let us run with endurance and active persistence the race that is set before us, 2 focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of our faith.”
As we start 2025, are there things holding us back or slowing us down? How do we invest our time? What’s at the top of our priority list? It’s easy to think “I’ll just do this first then I can spend time with God.” But, without Jesus as our focal point every day, we will never be able to endure.
But it’s not about us trying harder to be perfect. That’s impossible.
Jesus Himself has gone before us, lived the perfect life we couldn’t, died the death we deserved and rose again, victorious. You need his power if you’re going to finish the race. We have 24/7 access to this power!
He began a good work in you; he will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1: 6). How encouraging for us as we run this race! He started it and He will finish it.
