It’s International Men’s day on Tuesday 19th November 2024

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Men have traditionally been told that they need to be strong and brave and show no signs of weakness. Nowadays, men, and everyone, are told they can be anything and it’s ok to not be ok. This is a good thing in principal, bringing freedom and honesty, but should still be paired with encouragement. Men (and boys) need affirmation so that they are not discouraged but grow in understanding, recognising and overcoming fears and have courage with which they can help others. I know that I really appreciate the encouragement I receive from friends, colleagues and many others, and try to pass that on.

Ultimately the best encouragement though, comes from God, as Joshua discovered as he took on the baton of leading the Israelites. Whilst he kept his focus on God and listened to his counsel the nation thrived. As Christians we can join the move to support men and champion their needs, along with others, but we can also point to Jesus the man who showed what it meant to have courage, to weep, to love and care, to lead and encourage others.

God has given direction to all of us in how to live. Micah 6 v 8 says, “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Pray that more men will follow these instructions and know the encouragement from God to be strong and courageous in him!
