This week many of our schools celebrated world book day!
I wonder what you would answer if I asked you favourite book? My friends know that my answer would be ‘Well obviously the Bible, but after that, Anne of Green Gables.’ I have multiple copies of it, children’s versions, illustrated versions etc. I could tell you the story, explain the characters and even share some favourite quotes from it – “Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?” is a well-worn motto in my house, following an event of yet another mistake made by Anne over which she, yet again, feels much shame.
But do the events of the fictional life of Anne Shirley REALLY impact my life? I would have to say no. There are things that I love about the story, and L.M. Montgomery (the author) really knew how to capture the imagination of many people over the years, but that is nothing compared to my REAL favourite book, the Bible.
Now this book has words that have echoed through thousands of years. Truths that teach us who we are made to be, how to live well with others, that though our lives are full of mistakes there is One who will take away all shame, should we let him. Nowhere through the pages of the Bible are we promised earthly lives without trouble, but we are told that for those who are children in the Kingdom of God have an eternity ahead free of all sadness and pain. Through the words of this GREATEST book we can learn how to seek this Kingdom, and how to become a part of it. This is indeed a book to really read, and for more than one day!
