I am a governor at three primary schools. While it is rather an unseen role as governors’ meeting are often held when most staff and students have gone home,
school governors have an important role in shaping the future of education and influencing the lives of children. Governors make decisions that will affect the academic, moral, and spiritual development of students.
So what does the Bible have to say to guide school governors?
In Proverbs 11:3 we read The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.”
Governors’ actions, words, and decisions should be rooted in honesty and transparency. Students look up to their leadership, and it is integrity that will either build trust or cause it to crumble. It’s easy to become entangled in politics or personal gain, but God calls us to lead with a pure heart, guided by His truth.
Again in Proverbs 29:18 we read
Where there is no vision, the people perish; but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.”
School governors must have a vision for the future. This involves ensuring the school thrives academically, culturally, and spiritually. The decisions they make should aim to build a foundation for the next generation, equipping them with the skills they need not only for success in school but also in life.
A Prayer for school governors:
Lord, thank You for opportunities to serve as school governors. Grant them wisdom to lead with integrity, vision to guide schools toward a prosperous future, and the strength to make decisions that reflect Your will. Help them to sow seeds of righteousness that will bear fruit for generations to come. May Your Spirit guide every decision, every meeting, and every challenge governors face. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
