Thursday: “It’s the Lord!”

Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!”

V7a

Before we look at today’s scripture, I am reminded that today we remember VE day. The day when in 1945 we celebrated Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces. A day of mixed emotions as we mourned those who gave their lives but also celebrated that the awful time had come to an end.

We too should join with others and remember the sadness and the gladness of that day.

In our verse for today, we also see that John (‘the disciple who Jesus loved’) referring to Jesus as ‘Lord’, not ‘Jesus’ or ‘friend’, but ‘Lord’. The Greek here is Kyrios, a better translation is master, owner, ruler.

I first want to note that it is the disciple who recognised that Jesus loved him was the first one to recognise Jesus on the shore. How our hearts shout for joy when we see loved ones we have missed. Do you recognise Jesus when He calls to you? How does your heart respond?

Secondly, I want to note that in calling Jesus ‘Lord’ John was remembering too that he had surrendered unconditionally all of his animosity towards God and chose instead to allow a new ruler over him – Jesus.

To do today:

As we spend time reflecting on VE day let us also take some time to reflect on our relationship with Jesus. Do we unconditionally surrender our all to Him?

Let us also pray for the young people living in nations where there is currently conflict, that they may have peace, and even though their rulers may be defying God and leading their countries into war, that they as young people would know that they are loved by Jesus, and find strength for today and hope for tomorrow in Him.
