Sunday: Then Jesus served them
“Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,” Jesus said. So, Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore. There were 153 large fish, and yet the net hadn’t torn.
“Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.
Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish.
This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead.
V10-14
“Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught”. Jesus already had fish on the fire, so why ask the disciples to bring more? Well, I’m guessing that part of it is that teenage boys still eat a lot!! But more importantly, Jesus asks them to share what they have, even though He told them where to get it in the first place! Jesus is still asking us all to bring what we have to share with Him, and others around us to strengthen each other…what are you bringing?
Have you also noticed the change in Peter? In the few moments it took the others to get to shore he has recovered from the swim, and now as soon as Jesus says “Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught” Peter goes back and drags the net to shore, on his own. This is even before he has the chat with Jesus in the next part of the story. I wonder if Jesus also noted Peter’s willingness/eagerness to do something difficult before asking him to do something difficult…’Feed my sheep’.
Finally, I just want to end this week with this…’Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish.’ Why not find a moment in the busyness of the modern Sunday to remember and think on this. Think of what it means to you, for you and through you to others.
To do today:
What have you got individually and as a church that you can bring to help strengthen the children and young people across your community? Those you see regularly, and also those who you never see.
Pray that God would give you the strength today to do what you need to do, and the hope that you will see children and young people continue to find and grow in God in your community.
