Psalm 68:5
Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation.

It’s a human instinct to try to replace what we’ve lost, or never had. I recently purchased a new mobile phone (well actually it was a pre-owned, refurbished device that’s about 8 years old, but it’s distinctly better than my previous phone that was slowly dying) and I’m enjoying its fresh feel and longer battery life. Without it I would struggle in our modern world where a significant portion of life and work is done through these all-singing, all-dancing machines.

How much more lost do we feel though when we are without a significant friend or family member? How much closer do we cling to others in our lives when we miss those who mean so much to us? It’s a reminder of the importance of strong relationships to support us through our lives. Fathers in particular have a crucial role in protecting, providing and caring for their families and are glaringly absent when they’re not around. Many people without fathers have sought for a replacement in someone else, but no one will ever be able to fully take a father’s place.

That is except for our great God, Father of the fatherless. He is the one who will always be there, always protect, provide and care for each one of us, giving us unique attention, knowing us intimately and leading us into the fullest of lives. I’m overjoyed every time I see or hear of people turning to Father God when they are in need, recognising not just their need for a Father, but finding that need met by the greatest Father ever!
