This week, in a small year 7 youth group, we (Abi) were looking at the question ‘What happens when I compare myself with others?’ We thought about the disciples who argued over who was the greatest and Peter who asked Jesus what would be happening to John at the end of his life. And we thought about what we tend to compare with the people around us. Here’s some thoughts from one of our schools’ workers, Lou:
Ever struggled with ‘comparison-itis’? – comparing yourself to someone else’s successes so that you focus on your failure and struggle to be as successful as ‘everyone else.’ Schools have to battle with it too, just think of the comparisons that go on with data-driven SAT results and attendance league tables.
It would be easy to think that we are only seen and valued by how we perform.
This is a common disease but it is treatable with Faith, Hope & Love
Faith: Have you thought about ’success’ from a Kingdom perspective?…Matthew 20:16 “So those who are last now will be first then, and those who are first will be last.”
Hope: Life has its struggles and we often fall short, but we have hope that Jesus won’t fail. John 16:33 ‘Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.’
Love: Do you know how God sees you? Imagine God gazing at you and ask yourself how does God feel about me? Jeremiah 31:3 “I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself.”
