By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

Friday afternoon marked my last school session of this academic year as we had our final year 6 lesson helping children to think through their move up to high school. We have been going round doing many of these lessons across NISCU and one thing I love about these lessons is hearing the children’s favourite memories from primary school, looking back at all they have done and achieved with joy and satisfaction.

This time of year, many of us often look back over the year at the work we have done and look forward to a slower season, a time of rest, or perhaps some new adventures! On Friday morning I was in a year 8 end of term service where we were looking at this in the light of creation. God, our creator looked over His creation and saw that it was good and on the seventh day He rested. Not because He needed to, because he was tired or needed to recharge before carrying on, but out of deep satisfaction with work complete. God rested in order to enjoy His good creation with His people.

And He invites us to do the same. In fact, He has ordained rest, both in regular weekly rhythms but in longer seasons too. He invites us to enjoy His creation with Him here and now. Whatever your summer may look like, may you find moments of blessing, deep rest and joy.
